Statement by Libyan demonstrators outside the main

Of Amnesty International – London
We stand here today to draw world attention to the recent
violent conduct of the Libyan regime against political prisoners inside the
infamous “Abu Salim” prison in Tripoli – Libya that took place last Wednesday
4 October 2006, when the prison governor “Abdul-hamid Assayeh” ordered his
guards to fire with life ammunition at a large group of prisoners who were
objecting peacefully to their continued detention without a fair proper trial,
and to the excessive sentences passed against some of them which included the
death penalty and life imprisonment.
As a result of this violent response from the prison guards at
least one prisoner, Hafed Mansour Al-Zwai was killed and nine others were
seriously injured.
This recent violent conduct of 4 October brings bag the sad
memories of a large massacre perpetrated by the Libyan regime inside the same
prison about ten years again, when on 29 June 1996, about (1200) political
prison were killed in cold blood, and until today the Libyan regime refused to
allow an independent investigation into that massacre, or even reveal the
where about of the mass grave of those prisoners, or inform their families of
their death.
The current situation inside Abu Salim prison is very tense as
the Libyan regime has threatened to deal very harshly with the prisoners
unless they hand over any mobile telephones they have in their possession that
have been used to contact the outside world in the last few days.
We are extremely concerned that the Libyan regime may carry out
its threat, and as a consequence, another massacre is perpetrated against the
political prisoner’s population totaling about (600)
We urgently appeal to the international human rights
organisations and the Human Rights Council, and to the whole world to make
immediate representations to the Libyan regime in order to persuade them to
show restraint and guarantee the safety of the political prisoners inside Abu
Salim prison and to release all the political prisoners in Libya without any
delay.
