ما يجري الآن
ليس نزاعا دينيا ولكنه البحث عن شرعية، ويظل السؤال: من سيقود السيارة؟
على الرغم من كل شيء حدث في الأيام القليلة الماضية، شعب لبنان لا شهية له
لحرب أهلية أخرى.
ذهبت لتغطية تظاهرة في غرب بيروت
صباح الأمس، نعم لاحظوا "غرب بيروت" .. ثم استلمت رسالة نصية على الهاتف من
سيدة لبنانية تسألني فيما إذا كان عليها ارتداء الحجاب عندما تعود إلى
لبنان ...... كيف لي أن أجيب؟ .. أقول لها أن المطاعم لا تزال مفتوحة؟
بأنها تستطيع أن تتناول النبيذ مع العشاء؟
إنها لمشكلة، الحرب في غرب بيروت
ليست دينية، إنها عن الشرعية السياسية لحكومة لبنان والدعم "الأمريكي" لها
... بالمناسبة هذه الجملة في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية توصيف إجباري في
كل وسائل الإعلام هناك، وبالتالي من المفهوم أن تنازعه إيران ..
منذ بضعة أيام ذهبت إلى معرض صور
ولوحات في بيروت يحتوي على صور وملصقات ضخمة التقطت في الحرب الأهلية
المفجعة التي دارت رحاها لخمسة عشر سنة والتي كلفت اللبنانيين والفلسطينيين
مائة وخمسون ألف ضحية، المعرض كان يحمل اسم: "علامات النزاع، الصور
السياسية في حرب لبنان الأهلية 1975-1990" ..
خلصت إلى نتيجة مفادها بأنه لا
يمكن أن تشب حرب أهلية مرة أخرى في لبنان. .. كيف يمكن لأناس قاموا بإعداد
مثل هذا المعرض لصور مفزعة وبشعة، أن يعاودوا القتال في نزاع لا يرتجى منه
شيء؟ ... ولكن .. ألست أرى الآن صورا أخرى تكاد تكون مماثلة في شوارع بيروت
الغربية؟
حسنا فلنبدأ من البداية .... (فلتكن
حقبة ما بعد العثمانيين أومعاهدة فيرساي التي كانت نقطة انطلاق تاريخ لبنان)
.... أو ربما فلنبدأ بالأمس عندما طعن حتى الموت اثنان من أعضاء حزب الله
من قبل الدروز المسلمين في أحد الأزقة. أمر فظيع إذا صحّ.. لذا علينا
الابتداء ببيان الجيش اللبناني بأن الجنرال (وفيق شقير) سيبقى في منصبه
كقائد لوحدة الأمن في مطار بيروت .. وكذلك بكون قائد الجيش اللبناني
الجنرال ميشيل سليمان، عازم على إعادة الاستقرار وسيادة القانون (ميشيل
سليمان هو المفضل الآن كرئيس للجمهورية .. إذا ما عزم البرلمان أمرخ على
ذلك بعد الثمانية عشر محاولة للاجتماع في البرلمان دون أن ينعقد....).
ونتابع .. (في حالة أن القاريء
لم يلتبس عليه الأمر فعلا!) ... علينا التقدم أقرب نحو الحاضر، الجيش يطلب
إنهاء تواجد الميليشيات .. على سبيل المثال في نقاط التفتيش بلبنان؛ بالطبع
– هذا لن تجده في التصريحات الرسمية – يعني ذلك في حالة أن الميليشيات لا
تنهي نقاط تفتيشها وتفتح الطرق، ولكن انتبهوا! ...عندئذ سيقوم الجيش
يالانقسام وسيلتحق جنوده ليصبحوا أجزاء من نقاط التفتيش هذه .. بالأمس ..
قال تلفزيون حزب الله بأن الميليشيات سوف تقوم بالالتزام بطلب الجيش!
ولكن، فلنعد إلى التظاهرة، كنت أغطي منذ يومين عملية حزب الله عندما قام
بالهيمنة على غرب بيروت، استولى على تلفزيون سعد الحرير (المستقبل) ...
المحطة أقامها رفيق الحريري قبل اغتياله في 14 فبراير 2005 (فيما إذا كانت
سوريا هي المسؤولة أم لا .... تفحصوا جيدا هذا الحيز، كما يقولون!) ...
عندما استولى حزب الله على غرب بيروت من يومين، قاموا بقطع كابل نقل البث
لمحطة المستقبل، وهكذا بكل بساطة .. المائتين أو نحو ذلك، من المتظاهرين
كانوا فقط يضيعون وقتهم! ..
في هذه الأثناء، وعودة على معرض
الصور، حزب الكتائب في ملصقاته، (الذي لا يزال حيـٍّا بالمناسبة!) تقول
لمؤيديهم بأن "شهدائهم" ماتوا في سبيل أن "يعيش لبنان" ...
ملصق آخر يقول لقرائه بأن "المرابطون"
دمروا رمز الخيانة الفاشية .. الصهيونية السوداء"، أما الحزب "القومي
الاجتماعي السوري" فيدعو، بعد 53 سنة، إلى "انبعاث ووحدة المجتمع وتحرير
الأمة من الصهيونية والاحتلال الأجنبي" ... فلنتذكر بأن الحزب القومي
الاجتماعي السوري يريد أمة عربية تشمل "فلسطين" وكذلك قبرص! .. ثم نلاحظ
الزعيم البائس الموال لإسرائيل، بشير الجميل (الذي اغتيل بسنة 1982 بعد
فوزه بالرئاسة تحت مظلة الولاء لإسرئيل) نراه وهو يقول .. "أمتك تحتاج إليك
.. نعم أنت!" ... تماما مثلما كان يفعل اللورد كيتشنر! البريطاني إبان
الحرب العالمية الأولى يدعو مواطنيه للحرب على ألمانيا القيصرية ...
تابعت سيري حول المعرض، فكرت –
نعم فكرت – بأن هذه الحرب لا يمكن لها أن تستحدث من جديد. ... بل لقد دار
في ذهني أن أكتب مقالة أقول فيها بأن حربا أهلية لن تحدث هنا، لم أفعل! ..
ولكن عند التمعن الآن، وجدت أنه كان علي أن أرسل هذه المقالة للصحيفة ..
لأنه وبالرغم من كل شيء، لقد شاهدنا خلال الثلاث سنوات الماضية (أو
الاثنتين .. أو الثلاثين... أو حتى الألفين، اختاروا كما يحلو لكم)، ما
يفيدنا، وحسب اعتقادي: اللبنانيون لا يريدون حربا أهلية أخرى ...
منذ خمسة أيام، قمت بتسجيل
مقابلة بتلفزيون "المستقبل"، كانت بخصوص كتابي الجديد، ولقد قلت لمحاورتي
بأني: لا أعتقد أن حربا أهلية أخرى ستنشب في لبنان... ولأن حزب الله كان قد
قام بقطع كابل المحطة، فلن يكون هناك برنامج .. لن تبث مقابلتي ..
قالت لي السيدة الشابة التي أجرت
الحوار معي ".. نعم لقد قمنا بالمقابلة دون جدوى ... أي لن تعرض" ... نعم
أعتقد بأنها محقة فيما قالت، ومع ذلك لازلت أعتقد بأن اللبنانيين لن يسمحوا
بحرب جديدة ..
كل ما أستطيع قوله أمام هذا
الخضم من الوقائع:
حزب الله قام باستعراض في
الكورنيش أمام نافذتي بأسلحته، وسيارتي مزقتها ثقوب الرصاصات - بتكرم من من؟
.... فلنقلها بصراحة، حلفاء حزب الله الانتهازيين، أي ميليشيا "أمل" التي
يملكها رئيس البرلمان السيد نبيه بري ...
مثلي مثل جيمع من يعيش هنا،
سائقي وأنا كنا سعداء بعدم وجودنا بالسيارة عندما حدث ذلك .. ولكن .. في
لبنان، السؤال هو: من الذي سيقود السيارة؟ ....

want another war. Does it?
Despite
everything that has happened in the past few days,
the people have
no appetite for yet more civil conflict

I went to cover a demonstration
in West Beirut yesterday morning – yes, please note the capital W on
"West" – and then I get a text from a Lebanese woman on my mobile phone,
asking if she will have to wear a veil when she returns to Lebanon. How
do I reply? That the restaurants are still open? That you can still
drink wine with your dinner?
That is the problem. For the
war in West Beirut is not about religion. It is about the political
legitimacy of the Lebanese government and its "pro-American" support
(the latter an essential adjective to any US news agency report), which
Iran understandably challenges.
A few days ago, I went to view
an exhibition – here, in Beirut – of posters of the terrible 15-year
civil war which cost the Lebanese and Palestinians 150,000 lives. It was
called "Signs of Conflict: Political Posters of Lebanon's Civil War,
1975-1990", and I came to the conclusion that there would never be a
civil war in Lebanon again. How could a people who were prepared to show
such outrageous placards re-fight this hopeless conflict? But, am I not
seeing almost identical posters in the streets of West Beirut?
So let us start at the
beginning (be that the Ottoman, French, post-Versailles beginning of
Lebanese history). Or let us begin yesterday, when it was broadcast that
two Hizbollah members (for which read Shia Muslims) were knifed to death
in Aley by Druze Muslims. Outrageous, if true. So let us begin with the
statement that the Lebanese army command has decided to let Brigadier
General Wafiq Chucair remain in command of security at Beirut airport.
And that the Lebanese army commander – General Michel Sulaiman (the
favourite for president if parliament, after 18 sittings, decide to
choose one) – was determined to restore "law and order".
Thus (if the reader is not
already confused) we should advance to the near-present. The army is
demanding an end to all militia presence, for example the armed
checkpoints in Lebanon; also, the opening of all roads. The army's fear,
of course – and this is not in the official communiqués – is that if the
militias do not end checkpoints and open all roads, then the army itself
will split and its soldiers become part of the checkpoints. Yesterday,
though, Hizbollah TV said the militias would comply with the request.
But let's go back to that
demonstration I was covering in Beirut. Two days ago, Hizbollah, in its
takeover of West Beirut, captured Saad Hariri's Future Television. This
was the station of ex-prime minister Rafiq Hariri prior to his
assassination on 14 February 2005 (for whether Syria was responsible
watch this space, as they say). When Hizbollah took over West Beirut two
days ago, they cut Future's cable, and so the 200 or so demonstrators
who turned up yesterday were wasting their time.
Meanwhile, back at the poster
exhibition, the Phalangists (still very much alive) tell their
supporters that their "martyrs" died "for Lebanon to live". Another
tells readers that "the Morabitoun [in Arabic, the Muslim "Ambushers"]
destroyed the symbol of fascist treason, of black Zionism". The Syrian
Social Nationalist Party calls, after 53 years, for "the renaissance and
unity of society, and for the liberation of the nation from Zionist and
foreign occupation". Let us remember here that the SSNP still wants an
Arab nation which includes "Palestine", and Cyprus. And there is poor
old Bashir Gemayel (Phalangist leader, assassinated in 1982, after
winning the pro-Israeli presidential ticket) telling the Lebanese,
Kitchener-like, that "Your nation needs you – yes, You!"
And when I walked round that
exhibition, I thought – yes – that this war could never be recreated. I
even contemplated an article saying that there would not be another
civil war here. On reflection, I should have sent that story to this
paper. For despite everything that we have witnessed these past three
days (or two years, or the 30 years or 2,000 years, you take your pick),
I don't think the Lebanese want another civil war.
Five days ago, I recorded an interview for Saad Hariri's Future channel
about my new book, and told my interviewer that I did not think there
would be another civil war in Lebanon. Because Hizbollah has cut the
cables of the channel, there will be no programme. "You did it for
nothing," the young Lebanese woman interviewer told me yesterday. Yes, I
think she was right. But I still suspect that the Lebanese will not
tolerate another civil conflict.
And I say this in front of the
facts: that Hizbollah paraded down the Corniche in front of my apartment
with their weapons, and that my car is shredded with bullet holes
courtesy of – let us speak frankly – Hizbollah's venal allies, the Amal
militia (owner; Nabih Berri, speaker of parliament). Like all who live
here, my driver and I are happy we were not in the car. But in Lebanon,
the question is: who will drive the car?
