Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

Subject: Libyan Nationals threatened with deportation

Dear Mr Prime Minister,

We, the demonstrators here today, drawn from different parts of Britain, express our great concern for the five Libyan nationals (names listed bellow) living in the UK as political refugees.  They were arrested early this month under the suspicion that they pose a threat to British national security, and are now considered for deportation back to Libya.

Mr Prime Minister, the Libyan expatriate infomunity living in the UK, many of whom were welinfoed as political refugees, are law abiding people who share your concerns for peace and security in the UK.  If those Libyans arrested are suspected of acting against the law then we have every confidence in the British justice system to deal with them accordingly. However, deporting them back to Libya is an entirely different action that will undoubtedly put their lives in grave danger.

Human rights violations in Libya are well documented by international human rights organisations.  Arbitrary arrest, torture and even death are the fates of those suspected of being political opponents of the regime. Amnesty International recently documented many cases of Libyan nationals, who were political refugees and deported back to Libya from various countries, including European. They were immediately detained by the Libyan regime, subjected to torture and some died as a result.

Mr Prime Minister, we strongly appeal to you and urge your government not to deport any Libyan political refugees where their human rights will definitely be violated and their lives put under grave danger. We also urge you to consider very carefully any proposed extradition treaty with Libya. The Libyan regime will never keep any promise of guaranteeing the safety or human rights of any extradited persons, and as such the British Government will be infoplicit in the possible deaths of any individuals returned.
